Cuando Álvaro Siza, una de las principales figuras de la arquitectura contemporánea, ganó el prestigioso Premio Pritzker en 1992, el jurado destacó sus formas como «moldeadas por la luz, [con] una engañosa sencillez: son honestas. Siza nació en Matosinhos (Portugal) en 1933 y fundó su propio despacho en 1954 en Oporto, ciudad en cuya universidad imparte clases de construcción desde 1976. En 1988 recibió el Premio Mies van der Rohe de la Unión Europea, en 1997 el Praemium Imperiale en Japón, en 2009 la Medalla de Oro del RIBA y en 2012 el León de Oro por su trayectoria profesional en la Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia. Ha realizado un gran número de proyectos en Portugal y ha trabajado en la reestructuración del barrio lisboeta de Chiado tras el devastador incendio de 1988. También diseñó el pabellón portugués de la Expo de Lisboa 98 y el pabellón de la Serpentine Gallery de Londres en 2005, en colaboración con Eduardo Souto de Moura. Entre otros muchos proyectos, ha completado la Fundación Serralves (Oporto, 1998) y el Museo de la Fundación Iberê Camargo en Porto Alegre (Brasil, 2008). Como todas las monografías sobre arquitectos de TASCHEN, este libro ha sido elaborado en estrecha colaboración con el arquitecto e incluye un catálogo completo de todas sus obras hasta la fecha.
